Definition

A Botnet is a group of computers that work together to complete a task. These groups of computers are called ‘zombie computers’ and are controlled over the Internet. A botnet tends to be used the majority of the time for illegal activities, for example spam emails, store illegal software or images, and spread computer viruses. Botnets can also be use to blackmail companies by making it impossible to access their websites. They do this by getting thousands of computers to attempt to connect to the site simultaneously. This is known as a ‘Distributed Denial of Service' (DDOS) Attack.
