Definitions of identity

Identity could be defined as the individual characteristics by which a thing or person is recognized or known.
Identity is a key issue that defines us form one another, it also represents us in a manner that we aim to be perceived by. Identity forms the way we are perceived and helps guide and create impression of our demeanour and personality.

If we look at how identity is used and displayed in today's communities and environments, we have items such as :

Driving Licences
Bank Cards
Academic ID (e.g. student id , nus)

In an on-line situation identity takes a more personal approach that is less factual in comparison to the listed above, such as:

User names
Phrases and opinions

What makes identity?

The distinct qualities and personality of an individual regarded as a persisting entity and a mark of recognition.
Identity basically is something that is fluid and does not stagnate, they change over time.

There are different classifications of identity e.g.

Gender Identity - the gender with which a person identifies (or is identified by others)
Virtual Identity - basically a social identity that network users establish in on-line communities

The persona, personality, attitude and demeanour of an individual in reflection of the person making the observation collates to the building of an identity for a given individual. Identity has no set form ,duration or standard and can be fluid as it is adaptable to change in various situations and environments. Identity truly exists through a personal perspective and opinion.
