Definition

A virtual world is a computer simulated world which offers a simulation to the user. Virtual worlds can exist as part of a game or they might be constructed for business or for other forms of communication. Virtual worlds are intended to be a place where users can create artificial worlds of their choice, where they control factors such as where they live and the community they exist in. Some may even offer an alternate reality allowing the user to create his/her own individual world. Virtual worlds are also referred to as digital worlds or simulated worlds.

Although virtual world can be used for games, some have been developed for conferencing or for simulating aspects of the real world - for example, in order to look at what might happen if a particular business strategy was followed.
